Overdub Usage Guidelines

How much audio can I create with my Overdub Voice?

You can generate up to 1,000 Overdubs per month, which is more than enough for most use cases. If you think your use case will require a higher limit, please reach out to us at overdub@descript.com to discuss options.

What constitutes an 'Overdub'?

An 'Overdub' is considered to be:

  • Any string of typed characters (less than 1000 characters) with a pause of 2-3 seconds or greater between typing (i.e. if you're typing a sentence, but break for a moment to gather your thoughts).
  • Any sentence (less than 1000 characters) that is separated by ending sentence punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point).
  • A string of 1000 characters or less that is NOT separated by ending punctuation.

What is the difference between Overdub generated with the Pro plan vs. a Creator or Free plan?

While you can create a custom Overdub voice and generate Overdub with any Drive plan, the Free and Creator plans are limited to a list of the 1,001 most common English vocabulary words.

If any Overdub contains words that are not on that list, we will randomly select one word to be replaced with "jibber" or "jabber." To gain access to an un-restricted vocabulary list, you can upgrade to the Pro plan.

Can I use my custom Overdub voice with unlimited vocabulary on any of the Drive Projects that I have access to?

For users with access to multiple Drives, or with whom a Project has been shared, it's important to note that your Overdub voice will have an unlimited vocabulary if the Project you are working on is saved on a Drive with a Pro or Enterprise plan.

This same voice will be reduced to a limited vocabulary if your Project is saved on a Drive with a Free, Creator or Non-profit/Educational plan.
